Minor league report: Drew Pomeranz makes 2nd straight brilliant pitching start

Pomeranz, Cleveland's first pick in 2010 draft, has struck out 17 in 11 innings at Kinston, allowing just an unearned run on 3 hits and 2 walks. At Akron, Aeros get fine pitching in 3-2 win.

MINOR LEAGUE REPORT

AAA COLUMBUS CLIPPERS
Wednesday: Off

Notes: The Clippers (4-2) play a 4 p.m. doubleheader Thursday at Toledo against the Mud Hens (2-4). RH Jeanmar Gomez (1-0, 3.18) is scheduled to make one of the starts for the Clippers....2B Cord Phelps (.440) is 11 of 25 with one double, one triple, two home runs, seven RBI, five runs and four walks....2B Luis Valbuena (.412) is 7 of 17 with a homer....CF Ezequiel Carrera (.348) is 8 of 23 with one double, one triple, eight runs and five walks....3B Lonnie Chisenhall (.292) is 7 of 24 with five doubles, one homer and seven RBI....LH David Huff is the only pitcher to have made two starts, going 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA, allowing nine hits and six walks in 12 innings, with three strikeouts.

AA AKRON AEROS
Aeros 3, Curve 2 Right-handed starter Joe Gardner (2-0, 3.27) allowed one run on three hits in five innings and RF John Drennen (.250) slugged a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 3-1 Aeros lead in the Wednesday morning game at Canal Park. Gardner struck out two and walked four.

Back-to-back RBI doubles by 1B Matt McBride (.296) and DH Kyle Bellows (.214) put the Aeros ahead, 2-0, in the third inning. McBride was 3-of-3 and also doubled and walked. Drennen also singled and walked. RH reliever Cory Burns (0-0, 0.00) earned his fourth save in as many appearances, giving up an unearned run in the ninth inning but striking out the side.

LH reliever Nick Hagadone (0.00) pitched two scoreless, one-hit innings with three strikeouts. RH reliever Matthew Langwell pitched a shutout inning, fanning two. The Aeros are 4-3; the Curve, 3-4.

Notes: CF Grady Sizemore, on a rehab assignment from the Indians after having knee surgery last summer, got a rest and did not play after playing the previous two games. He is 5-of-14 (.357) for the Aeros....IF Jason Donald, also on a rehab assignment, singled twice in four at bats and stole a base. He is 3-of-11 (.273) for the Aeros....Joe Gardner has allowed just eight hits in 11 innings during his two winning starts, but has walked eight....Nick Hagadone has now made three relief appearances, pitching six scoreless innings on two hits, with six strikeouts and no walks.

A (ADVANCED) KINSTON INDIANS
Wilmington 2, Indians 1 LH Drew Pomeranz (0-0, 0.00), Cleveland’s first pick and the fifth overall in the 2010 draft, got a no-decision but made his second straight brilliant start, allowing an unearned run on one hit and two walks, with eight strikeouts, in 5 2/3 innings.

RH reliever Brett Brach (0-1, 1.80) pitched well but took the loss, allowing one run on two hits over the last 3 1/3 innings, with one strikeout and no walks. 3B Adam Abraham (.353) slugged his third homer, a solo clout, for the Indians’ run. 1B Justin Toole (.300) singled twice. The Indians are 1-5; the Blue Rocks, 4-2.

Notes: Pomeranz has struck out 17 in 11 innings, allowing three hits and two walks while giving up just the unearned run....Adam Abraham is 6 of 17 with the three homers, one double, six RBI and five walks....LF Bo Greenwell (.368) is 7 of 19 with a homer and two stolen bases....OF Tyler Holt (.313) is 5 of 16 with a double, five walks and four stolen bases.

A LAKE COUNTY CAPTAINS

Captains 13, Dragons 1: LH Mike Rayl (six innings, one hit allowed), RH Nickolas Sarianides (two innings, one hit allowed) and RH Dale Dickerson (one inning, one hit, one run) combined on a three-hitter, and DH Alex Monsalve hit a three-run homer as host Lake County downed Dayton.

Notes: OF Jason Smit (.522) is 12 of 23 with three doubles and a triple, three RBI and three runs....3B Giovanny Urshela (.348) is 8 of 23 with two doubles, four runs and three RBI....LF Anthony Gallas (.267), of Strongsville High School and Kent State, made his home debut at Classic Park in the Captains’ 2-1 loss to Dayton on Monday night. He doubled and singled in three at bats and stole a base....RH Michael Goodnight is 1-1 with an 0.90 ERA in two starts, allowing three hits and three walks while fanning eight....LH reliever Francisco Jimenez (1-0) has pitched seven scoreless, one-hit innings in two games. He’s struck out three and walked two....Wednesday night’s starter, Mike Rayl, pitched five shutout, one-hit innings to get credit for the Captains’ 2-1 win at Great Lakes last Friday. He struck out five and walked one....Captains manager Ted Kubiak has 975 wins in 12 seasons of managing in the Cleveland organization. His teams have made the playoffs seven times and the championship series five times. Kubiak’s lone league title was last season with the Captains. Kubiak was a major league infielder for 10 years, and played on the Oakland Athletics’ World Series champion teams of 1972, 1973 and 1974.
