Minor league report: Carrera, Kipnis, Head each have three hits to lead Captains over Toledo

Lake County's Jason Smit entered the weekend second in Midwest League with a .486 batting average.

Class AAA

COLUMBUS CLIPPERS

Clippers 10, Mud Hens 4: CF Ezequiel Carrera (.351) had three hits and three RBI, and 1B Jordan Brown also knocked in three runs as host Columbus thumped Toledo. 2B Jason Kipnis (.313) and LF Jerad Head (.368) each had three hits and scored two runs. RH Zach McAllister (2-0, 5.73 ERA) earned the victory by allowing three runs on four hits and four walks in six innings.

Notes: Going into Saturday’s game, 2B Cord Phelps was 13-for-32 (.406) with one double, one triple, two home runs, nine RBI, six runs and five walks....2B Luis Valbuena was 10-for-28 (.357) with two doubles and a homer....CF Ezequiel Carrera was 10-for-32 (.313) with one double, one triple, 10 runs and six walks....Right-handers Jeanmar Gomez (2-0, 1.42) and Alex White (0-0, 1.64) have each made two starts. Gomez has struck out 11, and allowed 15 hits and three walks in 12 2/3 innings. White has fanned 13 while yielding nine hits and three walks in 11 innings....RH reliever Zach Putnam (0-0, 1.69) had pitched 5 1/3 innings in three games with two saves, fanning three while giving up four hits and no walks.

AKRON AEROS

Saturday: The Aeros game at Reading was postponed because of rain. The Aeros (5-4) and Phillies (6-3) will play a 1:05 p.m. doubleheader at Reading on Sunday. Both games will be seven innings.

Notes: LH starters Scott Barnes (1-0, 1.64) and Kelvin De La Cruz (0-2, 0.90) and RH starters Joe Gardner (2-0, 3.27) and Austin Adams (1-0, 3.27) have a combined 2.30 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 43 innings. They have given up just 25 hits, including no home runs....Cory Burns (0-0, 0.00) has earned saves in all four of his appearances, with 11 strikeouts in four innings. He has allowed four hits, no walks and one unearned run....LH Nick Hagadone (0-0, 0.00) has made three relief appearances, pitching six scoreless innings on two hits, with six strikeouts and no walks....LH reliever Eric Berger (0-0, 0.00) has pitched four scoreless innings in two games, giving up one hit and no walks with four strikeouts....RH reliever Matthew Langwell has pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in four games....OF Tim Fedroff is 9-for-24 (.375) with one double, one homer, three RBI and three runs....CF Jordan Henry is 10-for-31 (.323) with two doubles, five runs, four RBI and three stolen bases.

Kinston Indians

Indians 5, Dash 2 (11): INF Justin Toole’s two-run double and C Roberto Perez’s run-scoring single in the top of the 11th inning lifted Kinston. Tyler Holt led off the 11th with a double. After a walk to 2B Casey Frawley (.200), RF Bo Greenwell’s sacrifice bunt advanced the runners. Indians RH Clayton Cook (2.70 ERA) allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and four walks in 4.2 innings. Frawley and 1B Chase Burnette (.242) each knocked in a run for Kinston. RH Tyler Sturdevant (1-0, 1.59) got the win with two innings of perfect relief.

Notes: Going into Saturday night’s game, 3B-1B Adam Abraham was 6-for-20 (.300) with three homers, one double, six RBI and six walks....LF Bo Greenwell was 9-for-23 (.391) with one double, one homer, four runs, three RBI and two stolen bases....OF Tyler Holt was 6-for-20 (.300) with a double, six walks and four stolen bases....2B Justin Toole was 5-for-14 (.357) with two stolen bases....LH Drew Pomeranz, the Indians’ first pick and the fifth selection overall in the 2010 draft, is 0-0 in two starts, but has given up just one run — unearned — and has struck out 17 in 11 innings, allowing three hits and two walks....LH T.J. McFarland (0-1, 2.25) has made two starts, striking out 12 in 12 innings, while allowing nine hits and a walk.

Lake County Captains

Captains 10, Hot Rods 7: SS Tyler Cannon (.385) scored the tying run on an intentional-walk wild pitch in the ninth inning, RF Jason Smit’s third hit was a run-scoring double and DH Alexander Lavisky singled in two insurance runs as Lake County won in Bowling Green, Ky.

Notes: Going into Saturday night’s game, OF Jason Smit was 17-for-35 (.486) with four doubles, one triple, one homer, seven RBI and six runs. Smit, a 21-year-old right-hander, is from Perth, Australia, and was signed by the Cleveland Indians as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He spent some of the early 2010 season on the disabled list and started slowly, then finished with a .262 batting average, 20 doubles, one triple, eight home runs and 41 RBI in 313 at bats over 86 games -- all with the Captains. He stole eight bases in nine tries....3B Giovanny Urshela was 14-for-34 (.412) with four doubles, six runs and four RBI....SS Tyler Cannon was 8-for-22 (.364) with one triple, one homer, six RBI and six runs....OF Anthony Gallas, of Strongsville High School and Kent State, was 9-for-29 (.310) with seven doubles and three stolen bases. He was 7-for-17 (.412) with six doubles in his last four games....OF Carlos Moncrief was 7-for-20 (.350) with four doubles and a triple....LH reliever Francisco Jimenez (1-0, 0.00) had pitched seven scoreless, one-hit innings in two games. He had struck out three and walked two....LH reliever J.D. Reichenbach (1-0, 1.08) had pitched 8 1/3 innings in three games, fanning six while yielding five hits and three walks....RH reliever Dale Dickerson (0-0, 3.38) had inherited five base-runners when coming on to pitch, and had allowed none of them to score....LH Mike Rayl is 2-0 with an 0.00 ERA in 11 innings over two starts, allowing no runs on two hits and three walks, with 11 strikeouts....RH Michael Goodnight is 1-1 with an 0.90 ERA in two starts, allowing three hits and three walks while fanning eight....Going into Saturday night, Captains manager Ted Kubiak had 977 wins in 12 seasons of managing in the Cleveland organization. His teams have made the playoffs seven times and the championship series five times. Kubiak’s lone league title was last season with the Captains. Kubiak was a major league infielder for 10 years, and played on the Oakland Athletics’ World Series champion teams of 1972, 1973 and 1974.
