Basford burglar comes clean about crimes while in prison

A BURGLAR told police he wanted to stop being stupid and confessed to more crimes in custody, a court heard.

Curtis Longstaff was on remand at the time waiting to be sentenced for burglary and attempted burglary in Mapperley in January.

When officers visited him, he told them about two more burglaries he had committed in 2009.

The 18-year-old then asked for them to be taken into consideration when he was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court.

Longstaff had been released in November after doing time for another burglary.

In January, he and two others committed another burglary and attempted burglary.

The trio forced open the kitchen window at a family home in Mapperley Hall Drive and stole rings from inside, including one worth 4,500.

Car keys were also taken and one car was moved on the driveway, while another was left in a neighbour's driveway.

The attempted burglary also happened in the same area on the same night.

A householder heard rattling and found two windows had been forced open at his home.

Police were called and arrived to see three youths running from the end of Mapperley Hall Drive, the court heard.

Longstaff, of Basford Road, Old Basford, admitted being with two youths. He said at the time he did not want anything to do with it.

His barrister, Martin Elwick, said Longstaff told police he wanted to stop being stupid, go back to college and sort his life out. He said: "He admitted being a lookout.

"He's supported by his family in court."

Judge Stokes told Longstaff that during the first burglary in Mapperley the occupants were in the house.

"Whether you were the lookout or the one that went in is neither here nor there," he said.

"You pleaded guilty today. If you are determined to turn your life around then this is precisely the time you need to do it."
