Football club kicks off its bid for a share of 25,000

MORE than 150 children could benefit from a 25,000 giveaway, as their football club kicks off its bid for a share of the cash.

The Nottingham Post has teamed up with The Nottingham Building Society to run the Cash For Your Community campaign, which will benefit hundreds of not-for-profit organisations.

And as we recognise the good done for communities by local sports clubs, we're inviting them to get in on the act.

Aspley Park Football Club, which provides training and games for children aged 16 and under, is the latest to sign up.

Chairman Ray Walker is hoping people will recognise the good the club does in the area and collect tokens for a cause that is "at the heart of the community."

"This is a really good initiative," he said.

"It's important that people in Nottingham know we have these charities and organisations.

"I think that if people sign up it would be proof the Big Society is already happening and it's not something the Government needs to be setting up.

"Funding like this is massive for us because we just rely on subs each week and we cannot always collect what we want to because of people's circumstances.

"There are people struggling financially but we would never stop them playing football, so now and again we do need to turn elsewhere for money.

"I hope people choose to collect for us because we are a local club and we are the only one in Aspley that does this. We are taking 150 kids off the street.

"We'll be promoting this campaign within the club and asking shops in the area to help us by collecting tokens. And we'll be keeping it very local because we are at the heart of the community."

Any money the football club receives in the campaign will be invested in the newest and youngest teams at Aspley Park.

Formed last year, the under-sixes currently have a kit but no equipment.

Mr Walker added: "These are mainly Year One children and many of them don't play football at the moment, so we want to give them the chance to play and compete at a friendly level."

Other not-for-profit organisations can also benefit from the Cash For Your Community campaign.

The first 200 charities to sign up before Wednesday, May 11, are guaranteed a share of the 25,000 up for grabs.

The bigger the number of tokens a charity receives, the bigger their prize will be.
