Radio review: Porn Again

Ex-home secretary Jacqui Smith's look at the pornography industry was explicit but still a bit of a yawn

The only novelty about Porn Again (5Live) was that a former home secretary was presenting. We're not used to hearing once-senior politicians comment as they watch porn, visit erotica conventions, or chat to those working in the industry. Jacqui Smith, however, claimed rather oddly that she had been "forced" to talk about pornography, "and not just at home with Richard".

Forced or not, this was her widely trailed radio debut in a largely predictable programme. Her input, which had an occasional frankness about it, was revealing in some ways: although she had legislated on porn-ography, she had never seen any, and had no idea it was freely available online. You could hear her reeling as she read the website options ? "Cum shot; dildos and toys; D.P?, double penetration, oh god; ebony; squirting; swallow; teen. Teen?" ? and wondered how she didn't already know about the extent of all this, if not the details.

There were some lively contributions from those making porn ("the problem is, you haven't got any knackers. If you had, you'd understand") and depressing comments from young women working in it ("You can argue we are objects, but it's just what life is now"). But it was all very familiar from other programmes and, for all the explicit things Smith described, a bit of a yawn.
