A WOMAN died at the scene of a house fire in Clifton.
The blaze happened at a semi-detached house in Pieris Drive, Clifton, at around 4pm yesterday.
The woman, who police said was in her 60s, was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre, but was confirmed dead yesterday.
A joint investigation into the cause of the fire is being carried out by the police and fire fighters, and a cordon was set up around the woman's home.
A nearby neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "It's a real shame, I came home from work and saw all the fire engines and police cars.
"She kept herself to herself, and I know that she lived alone. It's tragic."
A fireman at the scene confirmed there were no smoke alarms in the property.
A safety message reminding people to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their property was being put out by Notts Fire and Rescue Service today.
"There needs to be a message put out to people, there were no smoke alarms in the property, we are still working out the cause of the fire," said the fireman.
Crews had to use specialist breathing equipment to enter the property.
No other homes were affected by the fire, which gutted the woman's kitchen and left signs of black smoke on the walls.
Another neighbour, who would not be named, said: "We have lived here for 20 years and I always saw her about.
"We hadn't realised what had happened, but I thought it looked very serious.
"She never caused anyone any trouble and kept herself to herself."
A Notts Police spokesman confirmed an investigation was taking place.
He said it was too early to say whether the fire caused the woman's death – and said forensic examinations were continuing at the scene.
