Sutton-in-Ashfield pubs caught out in police underage drinking operation

FOUR pubs in Sutton-in-Ashfield have fallen foul of a police 'test purchase' operation using an underage volunteer.

The New Cross in Outram Street, Picture House in Fox Street, Devonshire Arms in High Pavement and White Swan in Devonshire Square all served the volunteer.

Only the Market Tavern in Market Place refused.

Bar staff were given fixed penalty notices, and the licensees were warned about their checking procedures.

Insp Andy Clarke of Notts Police said he was 'extremely disappointed' with the results.

He said: "This is part of an ongoing initiative to ensure we work in partnership with them to create a safe environment for patrons to visit and remind those working in the licensing trade of their licensing obligations.

"The licensees have been spoken to and warned that we will be continuing to conduct regular test purchase operations in the area.

"I expect to see a significant improvement in results, otherwise we will be forced to look at taking stronger action against those premises that continue to serve underage drinkers."
