General Aoun: Do Western democracies reconduct accused and suspected candidate as PM?

I met today with UN Special Coordinator to Lebanon Michael Williams who inquired about the current crisis in the country. I sent with him messages to the United Nations that he represents. So I asked him what would happen in any democratic country if the prime minister of this country is proven to have made a mistake, and he replied that ?he would be sent to trial.? Then I asked him what would happen to the prime minister of any of the democratic countries he represents in case of embezzlement and fraud of public funds, he also said that he would be brought to justice. I asked him whether this prime minister would be given the right to run for office another time before he is tried, he replied ?no?. So I asked him why all of these countries want to bring back to power an accused with proof that he managed false witnesses in the international investigation. This is in addition to the tens of billions of dollars that were squandered on his own hands and the hands of his policies, while he is covering both false witnesses and squandered funds he refuses to open an investigation into.UN Special Coordinator Williams was silent most of the time. Deprived of answers, he left hoping we would find out way out of the crisis. I would like to ask these same questions to all the countries concerned with our government. When we said that Hariri should not be brought back to power, we meant every word of it, not because we have a personal disagreement with him, or with the Sunnis of Lebanon as some people like to spread. The Sunni community of Lebanon comprises the most honorable and the most qualified of men, and those who see our position as an offense to them are in reality insulting us. No one can impose on us such a person [meaning Hariri], and even if all the powers of world come together, they won?t be able to do so. We cannot be in a country that has its own Constitution and laws and not respect these laws. If we sit together on a table of dialogue, which laws are we going to use to find a solution to our crisis? Isn?t it according to these laws and to the Constitution? We wonder which logic they are asking us to use. This is also the message I am sending out to all the Lebanese people. Let no one ask me to support or to accept less than an investigation and trial in all these violations; and whoever accepts less is to be considered as an accomplice. Q: It seems that the Saudi and Qatari initiative has failed and we heard the Saudi Foreign Minister talk about partitioning Lebanon. Would the situation be that dangerous if Hariri is no longer prime minister?General Aoun: let those who have an army to partition Lebanon bring their army and try. Lebanon will never be partitioned. Lebanon is too big to be swallowed and too small to be partitioned. I launched this slogan in 1978 during a meeting I had with Larry Pope at the State Department Lebanon Desk when I was on a mission regarding equipments to the Lebanese army. He asked me ?which army do you want to arm? Where is the Lebanese army and where is Lebanon, Lebanon might be partitioned.?This is when I replied to him saying that Lebanon is too big to be swallowed and too small to be partitioned.Lebanon will never be portioned whether the US wants it or not. We ask US official to remember how tough their tax control is and how they subject Lebanese people to it in the US. Will the US allow us to have tax control of the state budget? Can they get off our backs? Our crime is that we want to build a modern and transparent state where the rule of law prevails, and this is prohibited? we have to be corrupt so they can insult us and control us. What we want is a clean people and clean government that respect the law and we want to be strong and independent.
