Being Human returns with more than 1m viewers

Fourth series of supernatural drama opens with 1.12m viewers, almost double BBC3's slot average for past three months

BBC3's supernatural drama Being Human returned for its fourth series with just over 1.1 million viewers on Sunday night, slightly down on its third season launch.

Being Human had 889,000 viewers, a 3.4% share of the audience between 9pm and 10pm on BBC3, with a further 227,000 (0.87%) for the BBC HD simulcast, for 1.12 million in total.

The hit BBC3 drama was nearly double (up 89%) BBC3's slot average for the past three months but down from the 1.37 million who watched the start of the third series in January last year.

Being Human wasn't the only supernatural drama back on Sunday night. True Blood returned to FX with 249,000 viewers (1.3%) at 10pm.

To say this was an improvement on FX's three-month slot average may be an understatement. Its percentage increase? 1,200%, albeit from an obviously low base.

Elsewhere among the digital channels, ITV2's The Only Way Is Essex had 1.04 million viewers (4.8%) between 10pm and 10.45pm, marginally down on the 1.16 million for last Sunday's fourth series opener.

Baby it's cold out there

Call The Midwife kept on delivering for BBC1 with a record 9 million viewers but ITV1's Dancing on Ice slipped up.

The BBC1 maternity drama starring Miranda Hart has already been commissioned for a second series but if this keeps up they'll order a third and a fourth before the first one has started weening.

Call The Midwife had 9 million viewers, a 29.6% share, between 8pm and 9pm, up on its previous best of 8.7 million last week and a million viewers up on its debut three weeks ago.

ITV1's Dancing on Ice was down 400,000 viewers week on week, up against Call The Midwife and BBC1's resurgent Countryfile.

The celebrity ice dance show had 7.45 million (26.9%) between 6.25pm and 8.30pm.

Countryfile, which has never looked back since switching from Sunday morning to Sunday nights, was watched by 7.38 million viewers, a 26.9% share, between 7pm and 8pm.

Dancing on Ice returned later in the evening for its Skate-Off show with 6.45 million (25.3%) between 9.30pm and 10pm.

BBC1's Bomber Boys, a documentary about Bomber Command fronted by Ewan McGregor and his brother Colin, had 4.58 million viewers (18.3%) between 9pm and 10.30pm.

Back of the net

Manchester United's dramatic three-goal comeback against Chelsea proved a ratings bonanza for Sky Sports 1, although even a drab 0-0 draw would have guaranteed a big audience.

Live Super Sunday had an average of 2.7 million viewers, a 12.9% share, from 3.30pm, with a five-minute peak of 3.97 million.

The second of a Premier League double header on Sky Sports 1, the fist Live Super Sunday, featuring Newcastle's 2-1 win over Aston Villa, had 1.44 million viewers (10%) between 1pm and 3.30pm, with a five-minute peak of 1.9 million.
