In a competitive 9pm slot, Channel 4's annual Big Fat Quiz of the Year hosted by Jimmy Carr drew 3.1 million viewers, a 13.4% share, between 9pm and 11.05pm, rising to 3.5 million with Channel 4+1, putting BBC2's Three Men Go To New England to the sword.

The latest in a series of unlikely adventures for Rory McGrath, Griff Rhys Jones and Dara O Briain could only manage 1.8 million viewers, 6.8% of the audience, between 9pm and 10pm.

Channel 5's Carry On Christmas, a festive special first broadcast in 1969, was watched by 800,000 viewers, a 3% share of the audience.
