A THUG who claimed in court that he was a semi-professional footballer has been sentenced for perverting the course of justice after the Post exposed his lie.
In January, Alex Russell, 19, walked from Nottingham Crown Court with a suspended sentence and an order to pay 10,400 compensation to a man he had punched.
The judge was initially persuaded to spare him from prison after he heard Russell could potentially lose his career if he was sent to custody.
But the following month he was locked up after he admitting lying to the judge about playing for Hucknall Town Football Club once the Post had exposed him as a liar.
Now Russell, 19, of Melford Road, Bilborough, and a 17-year-old youth have admitted perverting the course of justice after a false reference was given to the court about his promising football career at Hucknall.
Yesterday, Russell received a three-month sentence and the 17-year-old, who wrote the reference, a nine-month referral order. Both pleaded guilty on April Fool's Day.
Judge James Sampson told the 17-year-old: "This was an act of monumental stupidity on your part."
