Bases-loaded walk keeps Clippers on a roll: Minor-league report

Copeland's homer not enough for Aeros; sloppy defense leads to lopsided Captains loss; Mahoning Valley scores early, holds off Auburn; Crushers' 11 hits fuels victory.

AAA Columbus Clippers

Clippers 5, Chiefs 4: DH Beau Mills (.250) walked to force in the winning run in the ninth as Columbus beat visiting Syracuse (N.Y.) in International League play. OF Jerad Head (.291) hit his 21st homer and Mills, 2B Cord Phelps (.300) and 1B Nick Johnson added RBI singles for the Clippers. Josh Judy (6-2, 2.98) got the win although he blew a save in the ninth, giving up a tying homer.

AA Akron Aeros

Rock Cats 4, Aeros 3: C Chris Hermann's RBI double drove in the winning run as visiting New Britain (Conn.) beat Akron in the Eastern League game. 1B Raul Padron (.274) had an RBI single for Akron in the first and later tripled and scored on a wild pitch. LF Ben Copeland (.257) hit his fourth homer for the Aeros. Steve Wright (1-1, 4.09) gave up four runs on nine hits in six innings and took the loss.

Advanced A Kinston Indians

Red Sox at Indians, ppd., rain: Salem (Va.) and Kinston will play a doubleheader starting at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in Kinston, N.C.

A Lake County Captains

Dragons 12, Captains 0: A fielding error and three wild pitches by Joey Mahalic helped Dayton to score six runs in the seventh in the Midwest League game in Eastlake. 3B Giovanny Urshela (.246) had two hits for the Captains. Kirk Westmore (3-1, 6.62) pitched five innings and gave up six earned runs on six hits and took the loss.

A Mahoning Valley Scrappers

Scrappers 5, Doubledays 3: 2B Todd Hankins (.274) tripled in two runs in the first, then scored on a wild pitch and 3B Jordan Smith (.344) had two RBI singles as Mahoning Valley topped Auburn (N.Y.) in the New York-Penn League game in Niles, Ohio. Rob Nixon (5-3, 4.25) pitched six innings, giving up three runs.

Independent Lake Erie Crushers

Crushers 8, Otters 4 Lake Erie committed three errors but banged out 11 hits, including a homer by Kellen Kulbacki, to beat Evansville (Ind.) in Avon.
